A time axis: monkey-bone-space. That's human history's summary. The end of 1999 was shaped by La Fura dels Baus in a being of beings, with the bodylines of thousands of internauts. That was THE MILLENNIUM MAN. There we employed physical and digital elements. This year we decided to remain just in the virtual domain. The net we'll be our Plaza de Catalunya, and the creature's gender won't arise any arguments: it's not a man, it's not a woman. For the year 2001 -thanks to Kubrick- we've gone directly to the prologue: the scene of a monkey standing with a bone in its hand is already a paratheatrical act. The pretended "evolution of the species" -though it's not been demonstrated yet by the past year 2000- depends on gestures like this. Humans assimilate them and turn them into a genetic thing: someone rising a flag, waving it, destroying the others, creating a cannibal ritual. For this year we've created THE MILLENNIUM MONKEY, a being that will grow with the pictures and he comments of the people wishing to be a part of this cyber-monkey. On this first stage, THE MILLENNIUM MONKEY is built by La Fura's full team in the very moment of is 21st anniversary: at 21 hours of December 21st, our building situated in Calle de la Ciencia 21, a few days before the beginning of the 21st century. This demonstrates that LA FURA DEL BAUS means prehistory and future at the same time: primitive and binary; ancestral and digital, convulsive, simian, obsessive, quixotic, ritual, spatial, metallic and dark.
