THE MARTYRDOM OF SAINT SEBASTIAN:
A free adaptation of Jean-Claude Debussy's musical
work: In this staging the destiny of Sebastian the martyr is not guided by
Eternity, but by his unease. Sebastian is not the expression of a sound, divine
logic, but a human one, that is to say fragile, mistake making. By means of an
equation of concepts we have translated the faith which impregnates the character
in D'Anunzio's original text (whatever that faith maybe, it is perhaps unbreakable),
for the idea of will (whatever that will maybe, it is perhaps breakable). The
Sebastian of La Fura dels Baus exercises his will, although he does not know
how to formulate it. Our martyr could be mistaken about everything, except the
pain which he feels in his desperation before the meaninglessness of a normal
life. Which is, on the other hand, the only life we know.
This opera has been performed in Rome, Cagliari, The Perelada Festival, Valencia
and Bilbao.
Premiere: 5th May 1997, Rome.
