NOUN

In the beginning there was chaos and only the first waters that gave birth to the universe were in that isolated territory . These waters, from where creator God rose, later became the Nile and gave birth to the Earth. The Egyptians called them Noun. Noun: the primitive waters, the incarnation of the chaos that existed at the very beginning. In the world of La Fura water has become a great machine. Noun is here a great machine that rises from the remains of the industrial civilisation and rules the New Order. Man is not put down but engendered by the machine which absorbs, involves

and covers him as an extra appendage. This relationship, the one that man and machine have, is the starting point of the reflection suggested by La Fura with Noun, a dramatic ten part structure.

Noun suggests that man and machine don´t have to be opposites. On the contrary, the machine, as the water for the ancient Egyptians, is here to stay and share our evolution. Everything depends on how this relation is stabilised, who uses who and for what. In the same way that water, until then quiet, gave birth to the Nile and the seas, and man learned how to use them and navigate through them, the relationship between man and machine also changes during the show. La Fura, however, doesn´t want to dictate a moral, Because, amongst other reasons, Noun ends with a new relationship, a new cycle about which we can´t know the end. There are no perverse machines or good men. In this world, of uncertain and disturbing beauty, there are men and machines closely connected. They depend on each other. Everything depends on them.

La Fura has gone deeply into the development of its language with this show. Further to the clever creations, the materials, the scenary, -with its great technical complexity- or the wardrobe, the language has been designed to make the symbolic value and the dramatic character stand out. The stage, a great vault, allows the audience to choose their point of view so that they can place themselves below, inside, or around the field of action, so , unlike other performances, the actors don´t invade the audience´s space.
